Eric Hutton
Professor, Philosophy
Research Summary: My research concerns Chinese philosophy, Greek philosophy, and ethics. On the Chinese side, I focus on the pre-Qin period, especially Confucianism. On the Greek side, I focus on the moral/political views of Plato and Aristotle. My work on ethics proceeds largely via studying past thinkers, but is also both informed by and engages with modern normative theory: e.g., my publications have explored how contemporary virtue ethics may assist but also benefit from the study of ancient Chinese views.

Research Summary: Ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. My interest in Hellenistic schools, like Stoics, skeptics, and Epicureans, the writings of Cicero, and in religious thought, gave rise to my book, Cicero on the Philosophy of Religion (CUP, 2019).
Now I am working on the problem of evil, and the temptations of the truth and curiosity, in Greco-Roman thought, and still on Cicero, especially his ethics.
I also have research interest and competence in ancient Christian thinkers like Augustine, and in Plato.

Research Summary: With Ancient Philosophy (especially Aristotle), Metaphysics, and Philosophy of Biology as my central areas of interest, my current focus is on questions regarding the fundamental status of organisms within Aristotle’s philosophy, in particular an exploration of Aristotle’s understanding of the metaphysical composition of organisms--and on drawing connections with contemporary philosophy of biology.
