Jeffrey Ralston Moore
Professor, Geology & Geophysics
Research Summary: Dr. Moore leads the Geohazards research group at the University of Utah, which focuses on studies of the mechanics of physical processes driving natural hazards and shaping the evolution of bedrock landscapes. The group relies heavily on field observations and monitoring data to address problems relating to rock mechanics, slope stability, and alpine geomorphology, with special emphasis on structural health monitoring of rock arches, towers, and other freestanding rock landforms.

Kirk Leroy Nichols
Professor (Lecturer), University of Utah, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism
Research Summary: Professor Nichols’ personal and professional interests are broadly anchored in the outdoors. His guiding and instructing have taken him from Alaska to the Andes, from deserts to mountains to rivers to oceans. Teaching field courses for the University of Utah began in 1975 and continues today. In 1986, he was awarded a scholarship for an Instructor course at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and remains an active NOLS Expedition Faculty member. He also i...

PAUL JEWELL
Professor, Geology & Geophysics
Research Summary: The major thrust of my research is applying sound hydrodynamic principles and models to fundamental problems of geochemistry and sedimentation in surface water environments. This is accomplished by acquiring relevant data on surface water settings and incorporating them into models of varying sophistocation. I presently working on three surface environments: Pleistocene Lake Bonneville in the western United States; alluvial channels in the intermountain west; and pit mine lakes.

BRENDA BOWEN
Director, Global Change and Sustainability Center, University of Utah
Chair, University of Utah, Atmospheric Sciences
Professor, Geology & Geophysics
Research Summary: I explore sedimentology, geochemistry, and environmental change to advance understanding of landscape evolution over geologic to human timescales. I use field observations, remote sensing, and a wide range of lab-based analytical techniques (geochemistry and microscopy) to characterize and interpret records of change. I work to facilitate interdisciplinary research and practice to address critical issues of global change and sustainable solutions for energy, resources, climate, and equity.
