Research Statement

Diabetes greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, which accounts for the largest number of deaths among American diabetic patients. Dr. Velayutham’s research aims to determine potential non-pharmacological, lifestyle-oriented strategies to reduce the cardiovascular complications in diabetes. His current research investigates the vascular effects of blueberries and strawberries with special emphasis on the microbial metabolites of berry anthocyanins and the molecular signaling mechanisms involved. These studies will provide key insights toward understanding the causal association between dietary berries, gut microbiome and vascular health.
