MITCHELL J. POWER
Curator of the Garrett Herbarium, Utah Museum of Natural History, University of Utah
Professor, Sch Of Environ,Society&Sustain
Research Summary: I am a historical biogeographer with interests in modern and past plant communities and how they respond to natural disturbance. My research is aimed at understanding how climate influences ecosystem dynamics through time. I currently have projects in Ethiopia, Bolivia, the Caribbean and in the Uinta Mountains of Utah. The long-term impacts of climate-driven and human-caused landscape dynamics, including large-scale disturbances, produce a landscape with inherited ecological legacies.
Regions of Interest:
Americas,
Bolivia,
Brazil,
British Virgin Islands,
Colombia,
Ethiopia,
France,
French Guiana,
Latin America and the Caribbean,
South Africa,
Southern Europe

JONATHAN A WANG
Assistant Professor, School Of Biological Sciences
Research Summary: I am an Earth system scientist studying how climate change, human activity, and disturbance are transforming terrestrial ecosystems and the carbon cycle at local to global scales. My work focuses on a range of biomes, including Arctic-boreal ecosystems, fire-prone temperate ecosystems, and urban areas, using time series remote sensing in high performance computing environments.

NALINI M NADKARNI
Professor Emeritus, School Of Biological Sciences
Research Summary: My academic and research interests include the following: community and ecosystem ecology of tropical and temperate forest canopies; the effects of forest fragmentation on biodiversity and community function; the development of database tools for canopy researchers; dissemination of research results to non-scientific audiences; partnering of scientists and artists to enhance conservation of forests.

STELLA MOSHER
Graduate Teaching Assist (TA), Sch Of Environ,Society&Sustain
Research Summary: I am interested in understanding how the Fynbos Biome, South Africa, has evolved due to climate and anthropogenic changes over millennia. I am reconstructing fire histories at ~2-year intervals over the past 4,200 years to better understand climate-vegetation-fire-human linkages and hope that my research will provide a paleoecological context for understanding how climate and people have influenced fire in the Fynbos.
-
Kate Magargal
Adjunct Assistant Professor, Anthropology Department
Adjunct Instructor, City & Metropolitan Planning
Assistant Professor (Lecturer), Honors College
Research Summary: My goal is to apply the tools of human behavioral ecology to better understand the past in a way that helps addresses contemporary social and environmental issues.
I do this with a particular focus on current and ancient land management regimes, Indigenous ecological knowledge, and land tenure.
-
Marc Bodson
Professor, Elect & Computer Engineering
Research Summary: My research interests include: Modeling, identification and control, with an emphasis on adaptive control, with applications in aerospace and electromechanical systems.

JENNIFER FOLLSTAD SHAH
Associate Director, University of Utah, Environmental & Sustainability
Associate Director, University of Utah, Environmental & Sustainability
Associate Professor, Sch Of Environ,Society&Sustain
Research Summary: I am an ecosystem ecologist whose research examines how global changes (climate change, urbanization, altered flow regimes, and non-native species invasions) affect microbial community dynamics and ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling and decomposition. I also am interested in applied research related to river and riparian restoration and green infrastructure. I use a variety of approaches, including field and laboratory studies and syntheses of scientific literature.
