Research Summary: My research interests fall into related categories: the social determinants of health/mental health for BIPOC individuals, families and communities and developing and evaluating anti-racist and inclusive higher education environments. I have a strong interest in integrating racial equity and intersectional frameworks in study designs, publications, technical assistance, and other academic and non-academic mediums. My work utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

KARA ANN BYRNE

Research Summary: Kara Byrne is a member of the Pediatric Integrated Post-Trauma Services (PIPS team), collaborating with Department of Pediatrics in the development and evaluation of the Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress (CPM-PTS). She also oversees research and evaluation of the Utah Psychotropic Oversight Program (UPOP). Kara is working with the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) researching racial and ethnic disproportionality and disparity in Utah's DCFS.

Research Summary: My research is concerned with dignity and belonging for students (and teachers) in diverse schools. I study how leadership facilitates practices and structures for equitable and inclusive learning environments. Specifically, I focus on intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality, and dis/ability in these systems. I have explored (de)humanizing practices and systems in professional learning, school reform, and inclusion for students with disabilities and complex trauma.
