Teaching Philosophy

I am a life-long learner whose desire for knowledge is quenched by learning from personal experiences, educational pursuits, and professional endeavors. Comparing myself to a pitcher that needs to be replenished by fresh water daily, I can only pour and share with others according to how much I enrich myself with current knowledge and apply the principles accordingly.

I believe that nursing is a formidable tandem of art and science – it is an art because it is a trusted medium through which healing of the mind and body can take place. It is also a science because nursing knowledge development follows scientific inquiry and is grounded upon evidence.  I believe that nursing requires compassion and competence and I paraphrase Heritage School's founder's thoughts, 'Competence, without compassion, is hollow; compassion, without competence, is weak.'  My goal is to nurture the passion for life-long learning among my students and to integrate it with the art and science of nursing to promote excellent patient care.  I believe that my mission as a teacher is to kindle my students' desire to learn and provide high quality care to clients across populaitons. I will strive to:

1. Create an atmosphere of caring.  The first message I desire to communicate to my student is that we're on the same side of the fence and I root for his or her success.  Whether the class is conducted through a traditional or online format, I can manifest caring through regular communication, timely and constructive  feedbacks, and a well-designed coursework that helps the student navigate and engage in learning. An atmosphere of caring fosters a trusting relationship which is the springboard for teaching and learning.

2. Develop a dynamic environment of learning. The teacher plays a crucial role in motivating the student to rigorously engage in learning. I will facilitate learning by utilizing relevant and innovative active teaching strategies that are learner-centered and which consider the learning styles of my students to optimize learning. I will foster evidence-based practice among my students by infusing research articles to solidify concepts and trigger clinical reasoning.

3. Integrate concepts with life.  Concepts can be internalized by applying them into familiar experiences or utilizing them as object lessons. I think of the Master Teacher and how He utilized parables to drive His point to the people around Him. Whether a student desires to be a ‘salt of the earth’ or prefers to hide ‘under a bushel,’ relating a concept to something familiar bridges the gap between knowledge and application.  When I was learning about glucosuria and the maximum transport load of glucose uptake by the cells, I pictured my boat transportation experiences in Manila, Philippines.   The boat could only take a limited number of passengers to the other bank and left others behind to wait for its return.  Because only a certain number could be accommodated at a time, people waited and crowded in the small waiting area. The number of people steadily increased because of other oncoming passengers. The people spread to other  areas in the waiting shed because it was getting crowded in the main docking area.  In the same token, glucose molecules that could not be transported into or accommodated by the cell accumulate in the bloodstream, thus creating high glucose levels which lead to negative health outcomes. I also think of the Frank-Starling Principle in facing challenges, similar to how the heart responds with stronger ventricular contractions to drive a larger stroke volume to its destined route. Instead of being stymied by adversity and experiences outside of my comfort zone, I think of other options to help me face formidable tasks and forge forward with my plan.
