Biography

Vincent P. Pecora taught previously at the University of California, Los Angeles (1985-2005), and has directed summer seminars for the School of Criticism and Theory (2002) and the Social Science Research Council (2010 and 2014). He is the author of Self and Form in Modern Narrative (Johns Hopkins, 1989), Households of the Soul (Johns Hopkins, 1997), Secularization and Cultural Criticism: Religion, Nation, and Modernity (Chicago, 2006), Secularization without End: Beckett, Mann, and Coetzee (Notre Dame, 2015), and Land and Literature in a Cosmopolitan Age (Oxford, 2020). He is the editor of Nations and Identities: Classic Readings (Blackwell, 2001), and a founding subject editor of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism (2016). Since 2021, he has been a consulting advisor to the Institute for World Languages and Cultures (IWLC) at Tsinghua University in Beijing, PRC. He is also the author of numerous essays on modern literature, literary theory, and secularization.
