Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to focus on real understanding as opposed to "how to" approaches. You will remember very little of substance at the end of a course.  If you understand how to spot important issues and know where to find answers, you will find this to be very important in the future.  I think that the most critical thing that we can teach our students is how to think about problems from first principles.  This skill will serve students well in their professional lives.   Grades are an unfortunate fact of life.  I try to use grades to create an incentive for learning but without unnecessary anxiety.

Courses I Teach

  • Economics 5360 - Industrial Organization
In this course we cover the economics of game theory, competition, monopoly, and oligoply. We then study the current economic thinking about various business practices such as vertical integration, resale price maintenance, predatory prices, bundling, intellectual property, and other issues.
  • Economics 5380 - Law and Economics
In this class I cover how to understand the fundamental concepts in the common law using economic principles.
  • Law 7320 - Antitrust Law
In this class I try to cover the history, economics, and development of antitrust law. We cover all of the leading cases in each area of antitrust practice, as well as discuss important topics concerning how to actually litigate antitrust cases.
