Biography
Robert R. Harrison teaches courses in health care law, regulatory law, and professional ethics, and serves on the University Institutional Review Board. Following undergraduate studies at the University of Richmond, he earned a Master of Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, and graduated from the Saint Louis University School of Law with an Honors Certificate in Health Law from the Center for Health Law Studies. Professor Harrison was a Fellow at the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy at Loyola University Chicago, earning a Master of Laws in Health Law with a concentration in regulatory compliance, and subsequently earned an Advanced Certificate in Bioethics and Health Policy and a doctorate in bioethics with a concentration in research ethics from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Professor Harrison has published widely in professional and academic journals, and delivered presentations at more than 50 regional and national conferences on law and medicine. His academic interests focus on issues at the intersection of regulatory law and ethics in human subjects research, ethics in medical professionalism, and the ethics of international clinical research. He is currently at work on a book about competing conceptions of autonomy and personhood underlying informed consent to clinical research participation.
Professor Harrison served for seven years on the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine, was Senior Counsel at the Johns Hopkins Health System, and most recently taught ethics at the University of Texas Rio Grande School of Medicine, where he held an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He is a founding partner at Stilling & Harrison, a regional health law firm based in Salt Lake City; a past Chair of the Health Law Section of the Federal Bar Association; a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives; and a member of the Governing Board and the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Legal Medicine.
