Biography

Dr. Erica Cristina Nelson is an Instructor (Clinical) at the College of Nursing. Erica has always enjoyed teaching. She has taught in various settings, including at a Practical Nursing program in rural Utah, as a guest lecturer in nursing and women’s studies courses at Brigham Young University, as a clinical preceptor for student midwives and nurse practitioners, and as faculty at the College of Nursing at the University of Utah. Her teaching philosophy includes the belief that using various teaching methods to present information enhances learners’ understanding and assimilation of the content. She is proficient in using traditional didactic in-class instruction, simulation, hands-on clinical preceptor instruction, virtual/remote learning, large group presentation, and personalized one-on-one instruction, depending on the needs of the learners and the educational program.
Dr. Erica Nelson has worked in private practice as a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) and women’s health nurse practitioner (WHNP) in Utah County since 2010. She has enjoyed caring for patients throughout their pregnancies, births, and beyond. As Team Lead, Erica was responsible for administrative and management functions for her midwife group. Working closely with her team of senior midwives, physicians, and clinic administration, Erica was able to develop administrative policies and clinical protocols that improved the work environment and practice outcomes. As a Spanish-speaking provider, Erica provides language-concordant care for Hispanic women. Her scholarly project for her Doctor of Nursing Practice program involved developing a quality improvement initiative to improve language-appropriate services for Spanish-speaking patients at a women's clinic.
Erica enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. She loves being anywhere with warm sunshine, likes to drive fast cars, and enjoys movies and afternoon naps.
