Biography
John Byrd is an Adjunct Professor of Geology at the University of Utah and the President of ByrdGEO. His B.A. and M.A. degrees from UC Santa Barbara established his foundation as field-based geoscientist that he utilized during more than 30 years as an explorationist for Esso Exploration, Exxon Production Research, Exxon Exploration, Anadarko, and Hess Corporation. John’s early career was punctuated by his Ph.D. in geophysics at the University of Utah which focused on the “Neotectonics of the Teton Fault, Wyoming”. As an explorationist John has been part of international frontier exploration projects and regional studies. He has also explored the Wyoming Overthrust, Hanna Basin, and deepwater GOM. Since establishing ByrdGEO in 2016, John has consulted for a number of different companies, but his main focus has been on teaching graduate level seminars at the University of Utah, summer field in SW Montana for South Dakota School of Mines and the University of Houston, and continuing to lead field trips through the Utah-Wyoming Overthrust Belt, Tetons, and Coast Ranges of California for students, petroleum companies, and private groups. He is on the board of directors for the Houston ToolBank, a “non-profit for non-profits” that provides resources for community improvement, disaster relief, and education in the greater Houston area.
