Research Statement

Organic-inorganic interfaces, while highly desirable for a host of applications, present several challenges that remain unresolved, including the ability to control the assembly of the organic and inorganic components and interfaces at the molecular level (orientation and mode of attachment), matching of phonon band structures with discrete vibrational modes within the hybrid material, and tuning energetic offsets for effective charge and spin transfer. Each of these parameters ultimately govern charge energy levels, charge transport, and the preservation of coherence. My research program at the University of Utah has centered on tackling these challenges using scale-bridging molecular design approaches spanning the following core themes: (i) elucidation of spin- and charge-transport dynamics at organic-inorganic interfaces; (ii) realization of topological states in 2D single-crystalline coordination polymers and small organic molecules; and (iii) development of in situ spectroscopy tools to understand excitonic and free carrier interactions in materials. My research efforts are driven by the following hypotheses: (1) matching phonon structure across interfaces through control of the attachment sites of molecules to surfaces that could allow for efficient coherent energy transfer and (2) topologically protected electronic states can be defined by 2D assembly of π-conjugated molecules and layered organic-inorganic materials on surfaces as a means of spin-coherent electronic transport.
