Teaching Philosophy

I am a firm believer in active learning and in maintaining a lively and interactive environment in the classroom setting. Teaching is not about lecturing to students; it is about presenting theories and concepts in a way that they can integrate the information into their own life experience. It is important to create meaningful class presentations and develop stimulating and thought-provoking assignments. The use of questions, stories, case studies, or media presentations to provoke a class discussion that is pertinent to our topic of the day but that students can also apply in their own lives has been a positive approach in my teaching experience. Students learn best when they feel comfortable and when they feel a genuine concern from their teacher. Understanding this, it is my goal to create a learning environment where students know I am excited to teach them and where students feel encouraged and safe to participate. Student feedback is critical for a successful learning experience, I invite my students to share their concerns with me at any time and stress the importance of my mid-term evaluations as an opportunity for students to help me tailor the class environment to their learning needs and as is appropriate for both teacher and learner. I was born with a genuine love of learning, and along the way I also gained a love for teaching. My teaching style and techniques are evolving daily through professional development, observing my peers, and most importantly by listening to my students. There is always more to learn and more creative ways to teach and impart knowledge.
