Community Partnership

  • As part of University of Utah Driving (DC), I and the DC team held town hall/community dialogues with the following marginalized communities: (1) Refugee Communities (Saturday, Jan- uary 29, 2022), (2) Latino Communities (Saturday, June 25, 2022 ), (3) Pacific Islander Communities (Saturday, September 17, 2022), and (4) African American Communities (Planned in January 2023. The purpose of these dialogues is to gather ideas and input from these communities on how to best support students in their pursuit of careers in STEM at the U. 02/2022 - 09/2023

Outreach

  • Refugees Exploring the Foundations of Undergraduate Education in Science (REFUGES). I have designed and directed a robust STEM-focused refugee and minority student support program called Refugees Exploring the Foundations of Undergraduate Education in Science (REFUGES), which has two distinct components: 1) an afterschool program for middle- and high-school students, 2) a summer bridge program for students transitioning to the U. 09/2013 - present
  • Sudanese Community in Utah (SCUT). I am the Chairman of the Board of Sudanese Community in Utah (SCUT), a non-profit organization that seeks to foster the potential ability of its mem- bers via case management, education, after school youth programs, advocacy, culture and sports. 10/2009 - present

Honors & Awards

  • Spirit of Abdus Salam Award: The family of International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) founder and Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam announced that Tino Nyawelo, professor of physics at the University of Utah, is a recipient of the 2023 Spirit of Salam Award. Revealed annually on Abdus Salam’s birthday, the award recognizes those who, like Salam himself, have worked tirelessly to promote the development of science and technology in disadvantaged parts of the world. Nyawelo was recognized for founding Refugees Exploring the Foundations of Undergraduate Education in Science (REFUGES), a program to help historically excluded students to pursue STEM education at the university level.   • The University of Utah’s Beacons of Excellence Award was introduced in 2012 through a partnership between the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Division of Student Affairs. As part of the University’s campaign to transform the undergraduate experience, the goal of the award is to recognize and celebrate the outstanding people, programs or projects who have helped make the University a Beacon of Excellence through their commitment to providing an exceptional student education.   • The CES Award recognizes and rewards a University of Utah faculty member of any rank for high quality work that integrates teaching, research and community engagement. The award recognizes faculty who show a record of successful teaching and research that is carried out through long-term, collaborative community-engaged partnerships that address a community-identified need or priority. Recipients of other University-wide teaching awards must wait five years prior to being eligible for consideration.
