Teaching Philosophy

I believe in centering the student in the learning process and empowering them with all the evidence-based tools of modern educational psychology. Class time is meant to explore complex, real-world applications and not to bore someone with endless facts. Learning is collaborative and requires active engagement from the student and the professor. Education should be accessible and affirming, even when difficult topics and conversations are required.

Courses I Teach

  • DENT 6802 - Tribal, Rural, and Underserved Dentistry I
Offered in fall for PRE-CAP students, this course explores the rewards, challenges, and complexities of providing dental care to communities that have historical and present access issues. A portion of this course is also dedicated to academic skills development in the interest of preparing PRE-CAP students for a successful career.
  • DENT 6804 - Tribal, Rural, and Underserved Dentistry II
Offered in spring for PRE-CAP students, this course continues the discussion of structural competency, including the historical context which has contributed to the present disparities many identity groups are subjected to. Of particular interest is how that history impacts present oral health access issues. Ultimately, this course will prepare students to discuss structural barriers with patients and will provide them with a valuable perspective on the role of dentists in the future of healthcare.
  • DENT 6806 - Tribal, Rural, and Underserved Dentistry III
Offered in the summer to PRE-CAP students, this course concludes the series with an emphasis on structural competency in practice. With a multidisciplinary emphasis, students in this class engage with communities directly to learn about real-time oral health needs in Utah.
  • DENT 7106 - Human Form and Function
In this first year predoctoral dental school course, the foundational sciences to the practice of dentistry are covered in great depth such that students are prepared to navigate the medicine required in their practice.
  • DENT 7135 - Host and Defense
In this first year predoctoral dental school course, immunology, virology, and microbiology are integrated with clinical and anatomic pathology to prepare students for practice in an increasingly complex world.
  • DENT 7159 - Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology I
Taught to dental students transitioning between their first and second years, this course introduces the complex pathologies of the head and neck relevant to the practice of dentistry.
  • DENT 7206 - Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology II
Taught to second year dental students, this course continues its coverage of the complex pathologies of the head and neck relevant to the practice of dentistry. Clinical implications are discussed in depth.
