Teaching Philosophy

My goal in teaching voice lessons to my students is to help them sing as freely, healthily, and expressively as possible. Each person learns differently and comes with varied assumptions and experiences, so it is important to communicate well and respectfully, and to try many ways to teach the concepts related to good singing. I also address acting, English and foreign language diction, practice habits, vocal hygiene, relaxation techniques, performance practice for different time periods of composition, and musicality, and provide performance opportunities in masterclasses and recitals. I encourage my students to attend as many vocal and instrumental performances as they can, and to do a great deal of listening to recordings of great artists. I try to maintain a comfortable and kind relationship with my students, so that they feel uninhibited and able to experiment with new techniques during their lessons and masterclasses.

Small Group Teaching

  • I taught masterclasses for my University students on 9/17/21, 12/1/21, and 12/7/21. Because of the pandemic we didn't have masterclasses in Spring semester. These masterclasses are a performance opportunity for my students, and I give them suggestions on technique, stage presence, and diction, to prepare them for their end of semester jury performances.  09/17/2021  -  12/07/2021
  • I gave four masterclasses throughout the year to my private students, each lasting 2 hours-4/10, 4/16,11/24,12/8. We work on technique, stage presence, and diction/languages, and it is open to any students or friends to observe. This is to prepare them for their jury and give additional performing experience.  04/10/2019  -  12/08/2019
  • I gave 5 masterclasses, 2 hours each, for my students and anyone who wants to attend or participate. I normally give 6, but I had to miss the last fall semester masterclass to go to Kansas for my sister's funeral. The students used the reserved time and room to rehearse with their accompanist for juries. The master classes were held at the U. on 4/8, 4/14,/4/23, and 11/28, 12/9.   04/08/2018  -  12/09/2018
