Research Summary

Philosophy is the machine tool industry of the mind: it makes the tools that we think with. And so one organizing theme of my research is the theory of rationality, first and foremost the study of how to reason successfully. When the reasoning is about how the facts stand, my main focus is metaphysics, that is, the accessories we invent to facilitate inferences; when it's about what to do, ways that different decision techniques anchor and shape different approaches to ethics.
