John Belz earned a PhD in Physics from Temple University in 1993, specializing in experimental high-energy physics. He was a postdoctoral associate at Rutgers university until 1998, after which he held a research faculty position at Montana State University and a faculty position at the University of Montana. While in Montana, Professor Belz began collaborating with the cosmic ray group at the University of Utah and he relocated to Utah in 2005. He was appointed as Associate Professor of Physics in 2014.
