Research Statement

Michelle Litchman, PhD, FNP-BC, FAANP is an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah College of Nursing, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Family Nurse Practitioner at the Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Center. She is the Medical Director of the Diabetes One Day Education and Care Program, a Larry H. Miller Family Wellness Initiative. She received a predoctoral fellowship from the Noorda Family Foundation/University of Utah John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence and the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence. Dr. Litchman is a Vice President’s Clinical and Translational Scholar at the University of Utah and APA LEAP for Diverse Scholars fellow.

Dr. Litchman’s program of research is broadly focused on the social context of chronic disease self-management, technologies to support chronic disease management, and how to translate evidence into clinical care.  Her NIDDK, foundation, and seed funding has focused on research projects that (1) developed and tested interventions to support diabetes self-management, (2) examined the use and effectiveness of emerging diabetes technologies (social media, mobile apps, real-time continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps and medical device biohacking), and (3) determined the role of online peers and family in supporting health. Her research examining the ‘black market’ of diabetes medications and supplies due to unaffordability has resulted in policy changes at the state and national level.
