Research Summary

Professor Yavuz's current research interests are: the socio-political evolution of Islamic Calvinism in Turkey (the Gulen movement; and role of religious ethics in the market); the Balkan Wars (1912-1923) and the construction of memory; and the origins of Kurdish nationalism and ethno-religious conflict in Anatolia (1878-2007)

Research Statement

Current projects: a book on the Gulen movement, the most powerful Islamic movement of Turkey, and Islamic Calvinisim. This book will assemble the socio-historical background of the movement by examining the life-story of Gülen within the larger national and regional forces that were shaping politics in Turkey. Alsoa an edited book about the Eastern Question and the Treaty of Berlin (1878).
