Research Summary

Bruce K. Gale, currently Director of the Utah State Center of Excellence for Biomedical Microfluidics and an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah since 2001, has three primary research areas: (1) microfluidics and micro-total-analysis systems (mu­-TAS) for research and diagnostic purposes; (2) microscale medical devices that typically include microfluidics; and (3) field flow fractionation for characterization of nanoparticles.

Research Statement

I am primarily interested in biomedical applications of microfluidics. I have expertise in developing biosensors, microarrays, micropumps, and microneedles. We study manufacturing and design methods for these types of devices. I am interested in studying and developing micro- and nano- systems that have application in DNA, protein (proteomics), lipid, and cellular analysis as well as drug delivery, biowarfare agent detection, medical diagnostics, and drug discovery. I also have significant experience and expertise in nanoparticle separations using field flow fractionation.
