Teaching Philosophy

Realizing that learning is different for everyone, my role as a nursing instructor is to be a supportive facilitator for all learning styles. I believe in using innovative ways and creative teaching strategies to provide student-centered learning, especially in this ever-evolving world of technology, health care, and educational advances. I believe my approach to education, just like my approach to patient care, should be inclusive, holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary.

My ultimate goal for my students is to prepare them with the knowledge base, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills they need to provide safe patient care and improve outcomes. My expectation of learners is that they are actively engaged in the learning process. To facilitate learning, I feel it is essential that the learning environment is one that is supportive, positive, and non-threatening. Respectful differences of opinions are encouraged.

In order to be an effective instructor, I believe I must stay current with best practices in my fields of nursing and education. I must constantly be evaluating and making improvements to both my clinical knowledge and skills, as well as how I educate. I strive to make learning enjoyable, and seek continual feedback from my peers and students on how I can improve. It is my hope that through my passionate approach to education and by modeling desired behaviors, I am creating a culture of excellence by motivating others to continually learn, grow, and improve.
