Biography

A clinical assistant professor teaching journalism and media courses as part of the Department of Communication, Marcie Young Canc io brings a strong emphasis on media literacy to all courses, incorporating critical discussion, analysis and engagement to further the value of knowing how to smartly read and consume media messages inside and outside the classroom. Incorporates collaborative and nonprofit news and storytelling projects into coursework in partnership with Amplify Utah. Faculty adviser to the Daily Utah Chronicle; founding adviser of the Utah College Media Collaborative. Select service: Committee co-chair in search for a religion, faith and spirituality tenure-line faculty position and the university's General Education Curriculum Committee, graduate student thesis committee, graduate student independent study faculty.

A veteran newspaper reporter, magazine editor, digital executive producer and television news managing editor, Young Cancio joined the University of Utah's communication faculty in 2023 after five years at Salt Lake Community College as assistant professor of journalism and digital media. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Marcie earned her master’s from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and fostered a news career at The Charlotte Observer, Condé Nast, Salt Lake magazine, KUTV 2News and KGO-TV, Disney’s ABC station in the Bay Area. In the summer of 2020, she founded Amplify Utah to help bolster representative storytelling in local media through student and emerging journalism and to amplify voices from across the greater Salt Lake community and state.
