Research Statement

Through process and production, my practice questions ideas of classification, hierarchy, social distinction, and epistemological precepts as it re-contextualizes objects, materials, and actions to point to alternative systems of logic. Within the work, situations hinge on the uncanny and confuse the ordinary in order to un-do structural categories and suggest layers of meaning. This un-doing encourages radical forms of experimentation, collaboration, resistance, and play.

I understand the act of making work in the studio, and the performance and presentation of the work, as a ritual. In making, I consider materials for their specific qualities and how in relation to other materials they reveal more of themselves. From these material experiments, research, and drawing, objects and actions are conceived. Bringing objects to fruition often triggers a palpable memory or feeling. Every step of the process is consequential. The forms, the qualities of the materials, and their positioning begin to tell a story. The goal is not to construct a clear narrative but rather to create a believable experience.
