Teaching Philosophy

      I enjoy teaching. I feel I bring my enthusiasm for teaching to students and they feel the energy I bring to the classroom or online. I teach two courses in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. I am recognized as an expert educator within the College of Nursing. The courses I teach reflect my focus on gerontology and the care of the aging adult. Sometimes I tell stories and bring humor to my lectures to make topics interesting and enjoyable.
      I share my passion for learning and seeking more knowledge as a teacher and nurse practitioner. I use a variety of teaching and assessment methods: discussions, case studies, quizzes, and short papers to assess student’s knowledge. I may ask questions to assess the degree of critical thinking and clinical reasoning.  Included in the course are modules from sites that are outside the College of Nursing that students have found to be very helpful with learning concepts. 
     Lastly, I make the classroom a safe space for students to candidly discuss issues related to course content and the healthcare system. I ask them to respect other’s opinions and to share. I feel energized when a student shares that our class discussion has prompted them to consider their research project topic or explore a new subject area.
     Using the learning management system, I have developed course content.  I am at an advanced level with using design tools in the courses. I find I can quickly adapt to changes and updates to the system.  I have taught other faculty about various tools and learned from them too. I enjoy either teaching in the classroom or teaching online. Both types of pedagogy have their challenges. I have been able to adapt to both.

  • NURS 6600 - Elder Health Promotion
    Advanced health assessment emphasizes processes and techniques of identifying and evaluating health status, health promotion, and risk reduction needs of older adults. There is particular emphasis placed on ways in which comprehensive geriatric assessment differs from assessment of younger individuals.
  • NURS 6603 - Chronic Problems of Adults and Elders
    Management of chronic illness in adults: The focus common: cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, endocrinology, psychiatric, pulmonary, genital – urinary, infectious disease, pain, cancer screening, musculoskeletal and joint, and systemic disorders.
