• Review by Guy Richards in Gramophone on the release of the album 'Chamber Works of Éric Tanguy' “The concentrated Piano Trio (2010-11) is a powerful yet melodically interesting piece, compellingly performed by Ambroise Aubrun, Tsan (who also commissioned it) and Steven Vanhauwaert. They are manifestly attuned to Tanguy’s wavelength, whether here or in their separate solo works: Aubrun in the fierce Élégie, Tsan in the moving, technically challenging Invocation (2009, written for that year’s Rostropovich Cello Competition) and Vanhauwaert in the Quattro Intermezzi (2003) which, taking their cue from Brahms’s late set, make no effort to emulate his style. En fait, beaucoup d’œuvres sont pour instrument soliste et/ou témoignent des relations d’estime et d’amitié du compositeur avec la violoncelliste Cécilia Tsan. C’est le cas du Trio pour piano, violon et violoncelle (2012), par lequel on commence. En un mouvement de 13 minutes, fondé sur un bref motif de six notes, il est largement fait de solos et de duos. En trois mouvements contrastés, la Sonate pour deux violons (2011) indique une haute connaissance de la technique et des possibilités expressives de l’instrument. Les quatre Intermezzi pour piano (2003) se réfèrent à l’inventivité et à la concentration des pièces éponymes de Brahms, dont ils retrouvent une certaine densité sonore. Suit Nouvelle Etude (2015), toujours pour piano : une idée de départ est transformée par le biais de l’harmonie, des registres et de la dynamique en une sorte de mouvement perpétuel. Sur quoi interviennent deux pièces pour instrument à cordes seul : Elégie pour violon (1994-1995), à la mémoire du compositeur et ami Dominique Troncin, et Invocation pour violoncelle, en trois parties et destiné au concours Rostropovitch (Paris 2009). Le Lys et la Lyre, pour soprano et violoncelle (2015) met en musique un poème du poète franco-chinois François Cheng, de l’Académie française et proche de la famille de Cécilia Tsan : c’est elle qui suggéra à Eric Tanguy la composition de l’ouvrage. Il s’agit ici également d’une anthologie de musiques de chambres qu’Éric Tanguy a composées entre 1995 et 2019, anthologie enregistrée aux États-Unis et qui comporte : pour instrument solo : Quattro Intermezzi et Nouvelle étude, pour piano, Élégie pour violon et Invoca- tion pour violoncelle. pour duo : Sonate pour deux violons une pièce vocale Le Lys et la lyre pour soprano et violoncelle et enfin un Trio pour violon, violoncelle et piano. J’allais écrire que pour moi le Trio et la Sonate pour deux violons étaient les chefs d’œuvre de cette an- thologie, mais à la troisième écoute, ils ne me semblent pas être les seuls... Le Trio d’abord, pièce d’un seul tenant, comme une variation continue qui ne vous lâche pas un seul instant tout en présentant des passages, notamment solistes d’une belle poésie. La Sonate pour deux violons est en trois mouvements, tantôt élégiaque (II) ou échevelé (III). Les Inter- mezzi font référence à ceux de Brahms, notamment le très apaisant 3e. Le 4e fait un peu « boogie », cousin de l’ostinato rythmique de la Nouvelle étude. Les deux pièces solos pour violon et pour violoncelle sont devenues déjà des classiques ; elles sont ici interprétées avec tout l’engagement voulu. Autre première au disque (comme le Trio ou la Nouvelle étude), Le Lys et la lyre, dialogue entre une so- prano et un violoncelle sur un poème de François Cheng. pièce volontairement simple et limpide. Un très beau panorama de la musique de chambre d’Éric Tanguy, avec d’excellent interprètes, au pre- mier rang desquels la violoncelliste Cecilia Tsan. 'Pianist Steven Vanhauwaert performed one of the most haunting interpretations I have heard, a beauty borne in memory and loss, and steeped in deep and severe despair. The Messengerwas composed by Valentin Silvestrov after the sudden death of his wife, herself a musicologist. Whatever descriptive language I might write at this point cannot and does not do the piece justice. Single three-note triads, found mostly in major keys, begin the piece, and were there to accompany the melody, still in a major key. At a certain point, modulation followed. Was that perhaps memory? Gradually the music itself became filled with loss, and the memory thereof. The Messenger was like nothing else I have heard. "Der langjährige Kontakt mit Cécilia Tsan wurde in den 2000er Jahren wieder intensiviert. Daraus entstand auf ihren Wunsch das Trio für Violine, Cello und Klavier, das in einem Satz eine quasi kontinuierliche Variation über ein kleines Motiv von sechs Noten auskostet. In der Sonate für zwei Violinen sind Doppelkonzerte von Vivaldi und Bach sowie Sonaten für zwei Violinen von Jean-Marie Leclair für den früher aktiven Geiger Tanguy der Ansatz, dieser Kombination ein heutiges Echo zu geben. Die Quattro Intermezzi für Klavier beziehen sich auf Brahms’ gleichnamige Werke. Tanguy hat diese durch auf strenger harmonischer, melodischer und rhythmischer Arbeit beruhende poetische, einzigartige Musik zu übersetzen und dadurch neu zu zeigen versucht. Die Neue Studie für Klavier solo ist nach einem einfachen Prinzip gearbeitet, bei dem ein Anfangsmotiv durch Harmonie, Register und Dynamik umgewandelt wird. Bei der Elegie für Violine solo werden kurz und intensiv Traurigkeit und Wut über den plötzlichen Verlusts eines Freundes und Kollegen ausgedrückt. Mit allen Interpreten, nicht nur Cécilia Tsan, verbinden Tanguy langjährige Beziehungen. Diese bieten für adäquate und intensive Auseinandersetzungen mit den Stücken Gewähr. So darf die auf gegenseitigem Respekt beruhende Nähe als Voraussetzung für die äußerst gelungenen Interpretationen gelten. Die unterschiedlichen Besetzungen der Werke geben einen weiteren Anreiz, diese abwechslungsreiche Einspielung anzuhören. Das Trio hat trotz seiner über viele Epochen geschaffenen Vorbilder einen ganz eigenen Charme, dem die Instrumentalisten mit Feingefühl und Eleganz nachsinnen.
