Research Statement

My research focuses on the physics-based modeling of natural and anthropogenic hazards and their impacts on the built environment. I combine constitutive models of geomaterials, computational mechanics and dynamics, and applied mathematics to design sustainable and resilient infrastructure. I strive to bridge the gap between various fields of science (Seismology and Geology) and engineering (Geomechanics and Multi-hazards) through rigorous analyses in this interdisciplinary research area. My past and ongoing work in the realm of seismic hazards include analysis of three-dimensional site effects, landslides, liquefaction, soil-structure interaction, and geo-energy related issues such as induced seismicity. The research topic of most important to me is the interaction of stress waves with material heterogeneities. My goal is to understand what the mechanisms of this interaction are and how these mechanisms at various scales control the overall response of geo-structures. Answering these questions is important because of its broad range of applications in both forward and inverse physics-based modeling. I combine state-of-the-art computational techniques with field observations (e.g., high spatio-temporal resolution data obtained from UAV photogrammetry and InSAR) to derive high-fidelity predictive models for natural and human-induced seismicity, landslides, hurricane intensity, etc. For inverse modeling, I utilize this understanding as a building block of non-invasive subsurface exploration with applications, for example, in geotechnical site characterization, geophysical velocity model, and energy-related deep exploration and monitoring.
