Research Statement
My research interest focuses on improving outcomes in older adults with heart failure through the examination of symptoms and risk factors associated with adverse events, as well as the development and evaluation of technology-based interventions through collaboration with local, national, and global partners. This interest stems from my personal experience caring for patients with heart failure who were rehospitalized, where I witnessed firsthand how patients struggle to understand and manage their disease, particularly their symptoms, when I worked in critical care. While I was pursuing my doctoral studies and working in home health care, I witnessed further barriers to self-management and the use of telehealth in the home setting (i.e., telehomecare), especially for older adults with heart failure. Based on those in-depth experiences with taking care of heart failure patients, my research focusing on heart failure in the doctoral program at the University of Pennsylvania and in the Aging and Informatics program for post-doctoral trainees at the University of Washington has helped me to integrate my research interests among the population of older adults with heart failure, broad clinical skills and mastery of statistical methods as well as informatics including the use of electronic health records and machine learning techniques.
