Research Statement

As a lifelong learner and teacher, my journey to academic librarianship charted a path through a variety of roles but one theme has been ever-present: I am passionate about important things and teaching students about them. As my interests have developed over time, so have my training and ability to connect these ideas in new ways.

Over time, my career has begun to move towards an ever-increasing clarity as to what I mean by these themes:

Important things have, and always will be, sources of data which can form seeds for future knowledge. This category began with the galaxies of resources which are available by refined over time to mean rare and special items, as in the case of my much-loved collection at the John Martin Rare Book Room and has now further been articulated into historical government documents. One of the great gifts of librarianship is that this process of increasing expertise need not come at the expense of facility with, and the use of, other data sources.

Learners come in all shapes and sizes and my own path as a learner has involved an ever-growing understanding of how to identify my patrons’ and partners’ needs. From very specific faculty projects to more wide-ranging undergraduate exploration, my ability to facilitate the scholarship of learning has grown exponentially over the years.

The crux of my own emergent work lies in mapping the connections between the important things and the learners. Leveraging the specificity of my expertise and the broad canvas of my teaching skillset, I have begun to research how we as librarians make the connections between searchers and information.
