Teaching Philosophy

I believe there is one simple truth in teaching. Students of any background, age, race, or gender are equipped with boundless energy and are capable of exceptional quality if given the space to fail/succeed with belief in their abilities. This has proven true in each of the 100+ courses I have taught in the past twenty years.

My pedagogy for this approach begins with a high expectation for achievement and well defined outcomes. All skill sets needed (within reason) are acquired with an insatiable appetite when students are equipped with clear goals and outcomes. Attitude defines the course atmosphere. Students should be empowered by and accountable for their work even when faced with failure. Creativity grows in a supportive and challenging environment. Further, the application of these principles must extend beyond the course and tie directly to the goals of the program. Students should be consistently connected to the overarching mission of their degree and program.
