Biography

Dr. Medina joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CvEEN) at the U of U as a Research Assistant Professor. Prior to joining the U of U, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he obtained a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in civil engineering. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogota, Colombia. His research interests include transportation safety, traffic control systems, ITS, and agent-based control. He has over 10 years of experience in transportation operations, and he is an active participant at TRB, IEEE, and ASCE conferences.

Dr. Medina is the research lead for the Utah Transportation and Public Safety – Crash Data Initiative (UTAPS-CDI), an effort to develop a content management system to improve the reliability of crash information in Utah and to develop data-driven decision-making tools to improve highway safety. Dr. Medina is working to establish UTAPS-CDI as a safety research hub for an extended range of state and national agencies.
