Biography

Paul Kuttner is Associate Director at University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), University of Utah. For over 20 years, UNP has built mutually beneficial partnerships between the university and west side Salt Lake City neighborhoods. As Associate Director, Paul leads UNP’s work in the areas of community-based research and evaluation, as well a supporting the growth and evolution of the UNP network. Paul is also on faculty in the Department of Education, Culture, and Society in the College of Education. A native of Boston, Paul earned his doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Prior to graduate school, Paul worked as a community educator, teaching theater and creative writing in schools and community organizations across Chicago.

As a scholar, Paul's research and teaching focus on the relationships between educational institutions (postsecondary and K-12) and communities that have faced marginalization and oppression in our school systems. Trained as an educational sociologist, his research is carried out in collaboration with youth, families, educators, and other community partners. Paul is a co-author, with Karen Mapp, of Partners in Education: A Dual Capacity Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships, and a co-editor of Disrupting the School-to-Prison Pipeline. His work has appeared in academic venues such as the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement, Teachers College Record, Metropolitan Universities, and Harvard Educational Review, as well as practice-focused outlets such as Phi Delta Kappan and Ed Week and community-facing products such as videos, comic books, and curricula.
