Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy encapsulates engaging students in small and large group activities as well as incorporating community engagement as appropriate. It is vital that students buy into the edcuation process regardless of cousre demands. A studet's willingness to be taught and teach is vital to synthesizig lecture and experience.

Courses I Teach

  • CSD4400 - Language Science
Linguistic analysis is the basis for many assessment and intervention procedures used in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. This course is designed to provide undergraduate students with a basic introduction to the principles and methods of linguistic analysis. The specific objectives for students enrolled in this course are as follows:
  • CSD4600 - Diverse Populations with Communication Needs
This course examines the unequal treatment experienced by culturally and linguistically diverse populations (CLD) with communication disorders due to developmental and acquired speech sound disorders, language and literacy impairments, dysfluencies, and voice disorders. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the concept of health and educational disparities in CLD populations and learn how to eliminate barriers to care for CLD individuals. The course critically examines factors that support systematic bias working against CLD individuals in gaining access to care. Students will also learn about the history of health-related and communication practices in CLD populations and the impact that beliefs, culture, social, and ethnic systems have on the treatment of communication disorders. Students will participate in a community engaged learning project that will help them to reflect and integrate key concepts from the course as well as address community needs.
  • CSD5380 - Speech and Language Development
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a background in the sequence and processes associated with typical speech and language development. Students will be introduced to current models of phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic and pragmatic acquisition.
  • CSD6410 - Cross-Cultural Competence using Interpreters
Modeled after successful programs in medical education, this course will contain both didactic and hands on instruction. The instruction will include lecture, guest presentations, small group activities, and hands-on training. Course content will address working with families with varying cultural beliefs and practices, how these beliefs and practices relate to health and medical disparities, and best practices using professional interpreters.
