Research Statement

My expertise provide the necessary background to be successful in designing and implementing disease detection strategies, which include laboratory-based diagnostics, and more importantly, field-deployable tests that are both sensitive and user-friendly. As part of my training at the University of Alberta (UofA) and UofU, I worked on aspects of assay performance that include surface immobilization of biological active recognition elements, micro and nanofabrication procedures, overcoming biocompatibility challenges, and reducing non-specific binding for improving assay operations in respect to analysis time, portability, ease-of-use, specificity, and sensitivity.

My early work in developing and evaluating in vitro tests has sparked my interest in contributing to the paradigm shift in diagnostics. Over the past decade, there have been numerus advancements; however, the majority of tests currently in use continue to rely on established gold standards such as enzyme-linked immunoassays (ELISA). I strongly believe that we have the knowledge and capability to advance these tests to a level that matches our technology we are using on a daily basis – handheld computers. Benefits from such form factors achieved through miniaturization and technological advancements include reduced analysis time, portability, and user-friendly operation.
