Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all students want to and are capable of learning. To achieve this, I believe that my role as an educator is to:

  1. Introduce students to scientific concepts and principles in a manner that is accessible to all.
  2. Challenge and provide all students with tools to learn.
  3. Go beyond the standard curriculum, sharing my enthusiasm for the material and relating it to real life and/or current research.
  4. Provide an inclusive and nurturing environment that fosters a growth mindset and allows students to self-identify as chemists.
  5. Go beyond the standard curriculum, teaching students soft skills that are not traditionally taught but are very relevant in the workforce.
  6. Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) into the curriculum, such that students can appreciate the diversity issues in STEM and become leaders for change.

This philosophy is based on my own experiences as a student with ADHD, woman in chemistry, and educator. As my teaching has and continues to evolve, I always think back to my experiences, and try to put myself in the students’ shoes, asking, what would work for me?
