Research Statement

Our research involves the use of emerging materials and the harnessing of unconventional physical phenomena with the ultimate goal of developing novel (opto)electronic devices that could be capable of overcoming the fundamental limitations of current technologies.  Some of the materials we employ include: (A) wide bandgap materials (e.g. AlGaN materials system, complex oxides, Ga2O3, etc.), (B) zero-gap materials (e.g. graphene, Cd3As2, (Bi,Sb)2(Te,Se)3, etc.), and (C) two-dimensional materials (e.g. transition metal di-chalcogenides).  With these materials we develop a wide range of (opto)electronic devices, ranging from steep-slope field effect transistors to reconfigurable metamaterials. We also have a strong interest in non-traditional transport phenomena such as electron-plasma waves and resonant-tunneling, as well as in structural phase transitions in materials and to harness these in device applications. Although historically our main research interest has been in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum, we are also interested in exploring materials and devices at RF, IR, and UV frequencies, as well as in developing devices for power electronics. Our research issupported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), DARPA, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
