Biography

Katharina Gerstenberger is professor of German in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Utah.  From 2012-2018 she served as Chair of World Languages & Cultures. She was interim director of the Environmental Humanities Graduate Program from 2020-2021. She is the author of Truth to Tell: German Women’s Autobiographies and Turn-of-the-Century Culture (2000) and Writing the New Berlin: The German Capital in Post-Wall Literature (2008). She co-edited German Literature in a New Century: Trends, Traditions, Transformations, Transitions (2008); After the Berlin Wall:  Germany and Beyond (2011); and Catastrophe and Catharsis:  Perspectives on Disaster and Redemption in German Culture and Beyond (2015). Her articles on topics of 20th and 21st German literary culture have appeared in Ecozona, Gegenwartsliteratur, Monatshefte, Women in German Yearbook, German Studies Review, German Politics and Society, German Quarterly, Telos and in several anthologies, including German Literature in the Age of Globalization (2004), Spatial Turns: Space, Place, and Mobility in German Literary and Visual Culture (2010), Generational Shifts in Contemporary German Culture (2010), and in German Ecocriticism in the Anthropocene (2017).  From 2007-2010 she was co-editor of Women in German Yearbook. She was the 2019/21 Research Professor of Environmental Humanities in the College of Humanities at the University of Utah. Gerstenberger currently serves as editor of German Studies Review.
