Dr. Phares holds multiple board certifications as an adult, pediatric and women's health nurse practitioner. She is also holds board certification as a nurse midwife from the American Midwifery Certification Board. Her areas of interest include diabetes, metabolism, and obesity treatments. Her research interests include diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention and and interprofessional team based care of patients with diabetes, particularly in community-based primary care settings. Dr. Phares holds undergraduate degrees in communication disorders and nursing, She earned her MSN from the University of Cincinnati as well as post-masters certificates as a pediatric nurse practitioner, women's health nurse practitioner, and nurse midwife. She earned her post-master's certificate as an adult nurse practitioner from Northern Kentucky University in 2007. Dr. Phares completed her PhD in nursing from the University of Kentucky in 2011. She holds faculty appointments in the College of Nursing and the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics.
Dr. Phares has extensive clinical experience as a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, and clinical preceptor for graduate students in multiple health-related professions. In addition to her teaching in the Primary Care Concentration of the Doctor of Nursing Program at the College of Nursing, she continues active clinical practice in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism and obesity. She is the Medical Director of the Healthy Body Healthy Heart Program at the University of Utah Diabtes and Endocrinology Center. This program is focused on preventing diabetes and heart disease in high risk individuals as well as interprofessional obesity treatment.
When she is not working, Dr. Phares enjoys spending time with her husband and two adult children. She is an avid hiker, swimmer, biker and outdoor sports enthusiast. She enjoys traveling to all parts of the world.
