Teaching Philosophy

My goal as an educator is to help create successful people who are life-long musicians, perpetuators of the arts and skilled teachers regardless of their eventual career pursuits. I strive to present and instill students to study music for its intrinsic qualities as a vehicle for personal discovery and realization of human potential in life. I endeavor to put students in the best possible situation to succeed providing an ever-growing list of resources to reach their potential. I strongly believe in creating an environment of understanding and open communication with students as well as a clear view of expectations and goals as future professionals in the music field.

My objectives as a studio teacher are not to cultivate successful percussionists, but to foster successful musicians who happen to play percussion. I believe in a well-balanced education and experience for percussion students including western and non-western musics. However, students’ specific interest should be encouraged and allowed to blossom within this overall philosophy. Classical percussion training should include orchestral studies, chamber repertoire, and solo work in the areas of timpani, keyboard percussion, snare drum and multi-percussion. Drumset instruction is essential to a percussionist’s training, as many job opportunities will require a certain level of proficiency in a variety of styles. The study of non-Western percussion is vital for students to achieve success in an ever-evolving music profession. Participation in large ensemble’s such as orchestra, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, marching band and world music ensembles also play an important role in the development of percussionists both in its development of inherent skills involved with the activity as well the experience of working within extremely unique, team-oriented concepts: valuable life skills.

In my classroom and applied teaching, I make use of modern technologies as well as teaching tools. Use of midi, integration of audio and video recording tools and  “smart classrooms” aid in providing a diverse and integrated learning environment. I strive to provide quality resources (both classically accepted and cutting edge) for achieving success in an ever-evolving music profession. Being an active member and participant in the Percussive Arts Society is one way in which I remain connected to performers, educators and researchers from around the world. This allows me to stay current with up to date teaching and performance tools, resources and musical trends within the profession.

Over the past years, I have immersed myself in the teaching pedagogies and philosophies of renowned authors such as Timothy Gallwey, Michael Colgrass and Dr. Frank Wilson to further understand human psychology and behavior. My own research into “cloning” as an evolution to enhanced performance practice in percussion has proven successful in my own teaching as well as colleagues through subsequent presentation. Through further presentation of articles and clinics, this research and practical application of cloning has far-reaching possibilities to percussion education.

I perceive the role of an educator to be the facilitation of students learning and growth through experiential teaching tools as well as creative processes. Learning occurs when there is an increased awareness of what is. A teacher’s role is to guide students’ awareness in ways as to bring about a heightened perception and if necessary, modification of performance. In helping to facilitate this process, I make every effort to utilize what Michael Colgrass refers to as “triple channel learning” consisting of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, or VAK, learning styles. Visual learning might include picturing what a given piece of music actually looks like in ones’ mind as a way to assist in memorization, actually seeing the music as it looks on the page. It can also be used as an aid against performance anxiety, picturing oneself actually walking out on stage for a performance, bowing and performing (and hearing the applause). Kinesthetically, in teaching rebound and relaxation as an imperative entity of the basic percussive stroke, I will often ask students to feel the vibration of the stick within their hand when these elements are properly implemented. Auditory can refer to the “mental aural picture”, the idea that if you have the sound that you are after in your mind and you have the facility to execute this sound, then your body will automatically respond (technique), producing what it is that you are imagining. It is the music that is driving force within the performer.  This is of course, is the highest level of operation for musicians and one that I continually strive for in my own playing as well as in the performance of my students.

Excellent teachers have a passion for what they do both as musicians and educators. Teaching is not just a profession; it is a way of life. I have been very fortunate to have wonderful teachers throughout my life and career. It is my desire to assist others in striving for their potential, as I myself have been inspired to work towards mine.

Courses I Teach

  • MUSC 4430-011 - World Percussion Group
The World Percussion Group focuses its repertoire on traditional music and dance from other cultures, particularly the various cultural groups that make up the West African country of Ghana. Participation is open to all interested students regardless of experience. While the focus of the ensemble is musical, cultural contexts relevant to the music studied are inherently stressed, giving the students and the audience a deeper understanding of the music’s meaning and a greater personal enjoyment of the music played. The ensemble is taught entirely through oral tradition and is based on studies at the Dagara Music Center outside of Accra, Ghana with Bernard Woma (master drummer and xylophonist with the National Theatre of Ghana).
  • MUSC 4485 - Percussion Ensemble   (http://music.utah.edu/areas/percussion/index.php)
Co-Direct this Ensemble with Professor Doug Wolf The Percussion Ensemble provides the student with the opportunity to perform and become familiar with the ever-growing volume of percussion ensemble literature. The ensemble will present public performances and clinic sessions of literature from the early works in this genre to the most current compositions.
  • MUSC 4485 - Percussion Chamber Ensemble   (http://music.utah.edu/areas/percussion/index.php)
Select Chamber Percussion Quartet within the larger Percussion Ensemble. This group focuses its repertoire on non-conducted works for percussion covering historically significant compositions to current compositional trends in music / percussion literature. This ensemble is responsible for commissioning several works for percussion. This ensemble does extensive touring.
