Courses I Teach

  • 6391 - Introduction to Clinical Science
This graduate-level seminar is designed for students who are beginning doctoral level training in the field of clinical psychology. The goals are: (a) for students to understand the evolution of the clinical science training model, (b) to understand the ways in which clinical intervention and clinical science are essentially intertwined, (c) to get exposure to a few clinical intervention approaches that are taught within the department, (d) to learn how to be a critical consumer of the empirical literature on clinical interventions and their efficacy/effectiveness, and (e) to learn about some of the classic debates within the literature on clinical interventions. This class is not designed to teach students “how to” do psychotherapy – that will occur over the course of many years, with advanced coursework (called “practica” in our program), supervised clinical experiences, an internship, and a lifetime of practice. Rather this class is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge necessary to embark productively and scientifically on that much longer journey.
  • Psychology 6613 - Assessment Practicum
This practicum provides supervised clinical experiences in the comprehensive process of psychological assessment (i.e., taking a referral question, identifying an assessment plan, conducting the assessment, interpreting the data, writing an integrative report, and providing feedback to the client and referral source). Additional didactics are also provided in child assessment skills and in specialty assessment areas such as health psychology, child psychology, forensic psychology, neuropsychology, interpersonal psychology, and personality. Three comprehensive assessments must be completed in order for students to meet the expectations for the course; these can be completed in either the Fall or the Spring semester. Students whose interests and career goals make it desirable to participate in the course both semesters in order to gain additional experience in conducting assessments may do so contingent on permission of the instructor (i.e., space, time, and workload permitting).
