Teaching Philosophy

I embrace the collective wisdom of the classroom and strive to provide students with the certainty of guidance through often uncertain pathways to learning. As education is never accomplished solely through the transmission of knowledge, I design my teaching to support critical thinking and promote the search for meaning. This requires each of us to recognize our current ways of knowing, expand our knowledge, and then reconsider our frameworks for understanding. It can be challenging to remain reflective, especially when new information is inconsistent with our current interpretations. When we react instead of reflect, we miss the opportunities to deepen our understanding and fully enjoy the personal and professional development that is available to us in higher education. With every encounter, I go through this process myself, learning from all who share our classroom space. The intensely personal nature of our learning experiences serves as preparation for the varied and demanding roles of our professions.
