Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the function of higher education is to help students develop the skills to critically evaluate ideas, synthesize literature and evidence, and to apply ideas and evidence. I believe that the best way to facilitate development of these skills is through active learning, which entails learning through discussion and experiences rather than through primarily didactic instruction. I believe that students in higher education should be mentored in their development as adult learners who take responsibility for their learning by searching out information through a variety of sources and activity participating in their educational experiences.
