Teachers need to make classes interesting to students. Our students have the talent to be successful engineers, but sometimes students they do not excel because we use monotonous teaching methods and they lose interest. I think we need to offce exciting classes, but at the same time we need to keep the academic rigor to provide the quality and quantity of the material presented in the course. In civil engineering, the professor also has the responsibility of making connections between theory and real applications.
Also, we cannot teach everything in class. I think a course is successful when students learn the fundamental concepts, and start to think independently. If they get the passion for the profession they will keep learning after their “formal” education is complete.
Courses I Teach
Structural Loads and Analysis
The goal of structural analysis is to determine the effects of loads on structures. At the end of the course, students should be able to: - Understand the fundamentals of structural loads. - Calculate deflections of beams and trusses. - Compute axial, shear, and moment forces on members of statically indeterminate structures. - Use structural analysis software to analyze structural systems.
Dynamics of Structures and Earthquake Engineering
Analytical methods for evaluating the dynamic response of structural systems (e.g., deformations, velocities, accelerations, and forces). Topics include free vibration, harmonic and periodic excitation, and step excitation of single-degree-of-freedom systems; numerical evaluation of dynamic response using time-stepping methods and Newmark's method; response and design spectra; and earthquake response of inelastic systems.
Special Topics: Seismic Design Nuclear Facilities
Seismic design and evaluation of the main structural components for different nuclear facilities. Topics include loads and material properties for nuclear facilities, soil-structure interaction effects on nuclear facilities, basic design concepts of containment structures for conventional and new generation nuclear power plants, as well as design of storage facilities. The course includes an overview of the probabilistic framework used in the current seismic design philosophy for nuclear facilities.
