Research Statement

 

            The overarching theme of my research is the conservation ecology of keystone vertebrates and their ecological functions in this age of global change. My research interests have three interlinked foci: studying the long-term responses to global change of animal communities living in threatened ecosystems, understanding how avian ecological attributes affect the likelihood and consequences of bird extinctions, and integrating my research with education, citizen science, community-based conservation, public outreach and capacity building. In my lab, we study the community ecology, population biology, habitat use, movements and survival of birds and mammals in human-dominated ecosystems, to answer fundamental questions in biogeography, conservation biology, ecology, evolution and global change biology. We then apply our findings to help protect and restore such landscapes for conserving native biodiversity and its ecosystem services.

            Global avian macroecology meta-analyses comprise the conceptual foundation of my long-term avian population biology and conservation ecology field research in the world’s biodiversity hotspots. How the combination of land use and climate change will affect biological communities is a critical question for the future of biodiversity, but there are few long-term studies, especially in the tropics and in the developing world. In search of answers, I conduct long-term avian community ecology, population biology and demography field studies to understand the effects of climate change and land use on climate-sensitive bird communities in East Africa, Turkey and Utah. I work in montane forest, wetland, and riparian ecosystems that are critical biodiversity oases surrounded by arid landscapes highly susceptible to warming and drought. With more than a decade of continuous data collection, we already documented the impacts of climate change on the wetland bird communities in Utah and Turkey. In a few years, my field research projects on the impacts of global change on vertebrate ecology and population dynamics will reach the twenty-year mark, when the effects of climate change on these populations will have become increasingly manifest. These growing, multi-decadal datasets, mostly collected in understudied and vulnerable ecosystems, also provide a critical foundation for my community-based conservation projects with local stakeholders and decision makers.

Despite the growing impact of climate change, habitat loss driven by human land use is still the biggest threat to the world’s biodiversity. Consequently, another major goal of my research is to quantify this threat and to find ways to mitigate it. Understanding the mechanisms behind the persistence of native species in human-dominated ecosystems, quantifying the changes in the ecological functions of these communities, and investigating the relative importance of different land cover types for biodiversity conservation is essential for predicting the future of biodiversity, for improving the sustainability of agriculture, and for developing more effective conservation policies in the human-dominated countryside. This is especially the case in the biodiverse tropics where I investigate how habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation impact bird populations, shape functional composition of avian communities and affect ecosystem services such as insectivory, seed dispersal and scavenging.

            In the course of my research, I also prioritize exposing my students to ongoing ecological studies, applied conservation and habitat restoration projects. Over 520 undergraduates experienced field biology research through my class field trips. One of my primary goals in setting up long-term bird banding and mammal camera trapping projects is providing accessible field research experience to undergraduates. This research is labor intensive, exciting, and attracts much student and public interest. This combination also makes my lab’s ecological research ideal for undergraduate volunteers and other citizen scientists. More than 800 students have been involved in these long-term bird banding and mammal camera trapping research projects. Across all projects, I provided field research experience to over 1300 Utah undergraduates in the past 12 years. In addition, most of the field assistants for my projects in Turkey are American, Turkish and international students, volunteers and citizen scientists working with my graduate students. Consequently, since 2004, I estimate that more than 1600 additional students from Turkey and 36 other countries were exposed to field research in my conservation ecology, ornithology and wildlife biology projects in Turkey.

            This has enabled me to establish and maintain a diverse long-term ecological research and community-based conservation program in eastern Turkey’s little-known biodiversity hotspots, while achieving the concrete conservation of biologically important areas hitherto neglected. Students and citizen scientists’ extensive and long-term involvement in my research led to mutual learning, increased my ability to collect data by an order of magnitude, and increased the reach and impact of my scientific, conservation and education mission. I worked hard to translate my research findings into new protected areas, as the lack of effective protected areas is a critical barrier to conservation globally. For example, I used wildlife satellite-tracking data of brown bears, wolves, and Eurasian lynx I have collared and tracked with my team to convince the government to create Turkey’s first wildlife corridor, in order to connect isolated large carnivore populations to those in the extensive forests of the Black Sea and Caucasus.

            In the next decade, my top research priorities as a conservation ecologist and ornithologist are to continue to identify the critical ecological traits, land use habits and movement patterns that influence keystone bird and mammal species’ susceptibility to global change, to identify overlooked taxa which are more threatened than we think, to plan for forward-looking protected areas that will provide refugia from climate change, and to initiate preemptive, science-based and practical conservation measures to stop biodiversity declines.

            I am a first-generation college student and one of the few ecologists from Turkey, a very biodiverse but little protected and under-investigated country whose language has no word for wilderness. My objectives are to use my ecological research experience to study the biodiversity of key ecosystems, particularly in Ethiopia, Turkey and Utah, simultaneously educate and employ local people, and create a model for integrated ecological research, conservation, education, and capacity-building that can be applied to any part of the world. The life-long goal of my conservation ecology research is to help transform the meaning of global change from negative to positive. I strive to produce cutting-edge conservation science and to translate it into effective environmental education, public outreach and community-based conservation, so that “global change” does not imply climate change, invasive species and habitat loss, but clean energy, conservation of biodiversity and planetary sustainability.

            I have worked with brilliant young people in the USA, Turkey, Ethiopia and other countries. I desire to pass on my ideas, expertise, and insights to the next generation of conservation biologists, ecologists and ornithologists. I am fortunate that my ideal position at the University of Utah gives me the necessary platform to do so. With my students, I look forward to investigating new ecological questions in Ethiopia, Turkey and Utah; to collaborating extensively to build a thorough understanding of ecological and biogeographical processes in threatened ecosystems worldwide; and to working persistently on the ground to continue to achieve official and effective protection of these ecosystems and their irreplaceable biodiversity.
