  • Breaking the Story Formula Audiences want stories that meet their expectations… just not in the way they expect it. That is the fine line a storyteller must walk, and it is one of the biggest challenges in media today. To do this effectively, directors and producers are relying more and more on animators, VFX artists, and interactive designers. Story has evolved over thousands of years and the expected structures (formulas) have been codified (i.e., Hero’s Journey, Save the Cat, and Story Circle/Embryo. In this session we will look at how filmmakers have subverted ‘formulas” using recognized story ‘forms’ to break from expectations. This includes ‘forms’ such as Time (Christopher Nolan), Setting (Cohen Brothers), Psychology, and Endings (Michael Arndt). We will also examine Genres (i.e., Comedy, Action, Hybrid Genres) and how their Tropes can easily become the formula. Animation tropes have included fairytale stories, funny side-kicks, breaking out into song, 'I want', and clear villains. What impact do cultural differences have on story expectations (i.e., Eastern versus Western storytelling [Do we read images differently? Do all stories have conflict?]) When breaking from norms, is it a Story’s Structure or its Storytelling (narrative) that provide the greatest latitude? Where do Unreliable Narrators, Clichés, Subtext, Cause-and-Effect, Choices, Arcs… come into play? This session reveals an audience’s story expectations, which, if you are going to break from expectations, it is very useful to know before you break them. This session is for those who want an understanding of how story norms have been broken in creating content for animated films, VFX, video games, interactive media. This presentation contains many visuals to illustrate the concepts. Invited Talk/Keynote, Presented, 04/26/2023.

  • Bringing Characters to Life Whether it is animation, VFX, or immersive media… character development in storytelling is tough to get right. It can seem like an impossible task to come up with engaging characters that your audience/players can emotionally connect to (identification). No matter what genre you prefer, fantasy, medieval, comedy, drama... the characters must be complex, knowable, and feel real. The characters must be capable of change (i.e., Arc). But where do you start? To flesh out characters, you begin with their motivations, backstories (influences from their history), psychology, and external relationships. Next, it is essential to differentiate their wants, goals, and needs. One must successfully delineate between archetypes versus stereotypes as well as making sure the characters are distinct, not generic. This session examines character conflict (e.g., internal, external, environmental), causality, and how difficult choices define a character. What is at stake? (i.e., survival, safety, love, esteem, etc.) What drives a character? Fear? Determination? Once you know your characters, you can create character-driven stories/experiences so your audience will care about what your characters are going through. Invited Talk/Keynote, Presented, 04/25/2023.

  • 2018 Referred CTNX (Creative Talent Network animation eXpo ) Speaker. The expo brings together the top professionals from both the traditional and digital worlds of animation. Burbank, CA. Story Structure and Development: A Guide for Animators. When animation studios say “it’s about the story”, everyone nods in agreement. However, creating stories, from animation to VR remains elusive if screenwriting hasn’t been your focus. This session provides the often overlooked core elements of “dramatic stories” using extensive clips illustrating the concepts. It is both highly informational as well as being entertaining for all levels of attendees. This session is specifically designed for animators, technical directors, VFX artists, and VR creators whose work is essential in making “story” come to life. It will examine story in context (e.g. theme, character, setting, conflict) and its relationship to how stories are developed (e.g. idea, plot types, using research effectively). It analyzes character conflict (e.g. internal, external characters, environmental), cause & effect, and how choice defines a character. In all stories there must be questions raised: What is at stake? (i.e. survival, safety, love, esteem, etc.), What moves a story forward (i.e. gaps, “what if”, emotional wounds, identification), and Is there a Character Arc for the audience to follow? How the traditional emphasis on story is shifting in VR will be examined. How much storytelling is in VR? Presentation, Presented, 11/18/2018.

  • Symposium on Emerging Technology Trends in Higher Education, Topic: Engineering and the Future of Art – What will change; What Has already changed; and What Won’t Change. Art and technology have always been interconnected, but now they are coupled more than ever before. When you think technology, you don’t usually think of the creation of oil paint or the camera, but they were just as radical in their day. It is stimulating as new technologies create new media (interactivity) and tools, as well as new expansive economic opportunities for artists. This expansion will only increase exponentially as we move beyond motion capture (quickly becoming common place) to motion input by gesture. It is a very disruptive time for the arts. With new technologies of fabrication, remixing, editing, and disseminating, it is becoming easier to create things. This proliferation means what? John Lasseter (Director, Toy Story) argued twenty-five years ago that with new computer animation programs will come bad computer animation “due to the unfamiliarly with the fundamental principles.” The challenge is not to discard the fundamentals and aesthetic in the same “bath water” as we work outside of what’s perceived as traditional to incorporate other technical aspects. It is an exciting future as we engineer with new interactivities (i.e. augmented, virtual, social) as well as technologies, such as 3D printers, nanotechnology, and the Internet. The challenge is to recognize the difference between the past, the future, and the timeless. http://epubs.utah.edu/index.php/emerge/article/view/1348/1010 . Presentation, Presented, 02/17/2015.
