Biography

Professor Arent was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 1996 where she served as Democratic Whip and Assistant Democratic Whip. In 2002 she was elected to the Utah Senate where she served until the end of 2006. Arent was elected Democratice National Committeewoman from Utah at the 2008 State Democratic Convention. In 2010, she returned to public office as the Representative of District 36 in the Utah House of Representatives.

She completed two federal clerkships for the Honorable Bruce S. Jenkins (UT) and the Honorable Ilana Diamond Rovner (IL) and worked as a litigation associate at Snow, Christensen and Martineau. Professor Arent served as Associate General Counsel to the Utah Legislature where she was Chief Counsel to the Senate and House Energy, Natural Resources and Agriculture Committees and the Joint Public Utilities Interim Committee. Professor Arent was the Chief of the Fair Business Enforcement Division and Chief of Legislative Relations in the Utah Attorney General's Office. She also served as Vice Chair of the National Association of Attorneys General Antitrust Task Force and was the Founder and Chair of the Utah Attorney General's Pro Bono Committee.

Professor Arent was Vice President of the National Association of Jewish Legislators, appointed to various committees of the National Conference of State Legislatures, and served on the Utah Constitutional Revision Commission. She has received many awards for her legislative service including the Legislative Coalition for People with Disabilities Hero on the Hill Award, the Utah State Judicial Council Award Recognizing Outstanding Contributions to the State Courts and Community, the Utah Chapter of the American Society of Public Administrators Senator Arthur Watkins Distinguished Service Award for an Elected Official, and the Planned Parenthood Action Council Just Say No Award. She was also honored with the Justice Christine M. Durham Utah Woman Lawyer of the Year, the University of Utah Department of Communications Quintus C. Wilson Alumni Achievement Award, and the United Jewish Federation Annual Community Achievement Award.

Professor Arent serves on many community boards and committees including the University of Utah Hospital Board of Directors, the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors, and the Executive Committee of the Utah Democratic Party. She currently chairs the Utah Safe Haven Committee and The McGillis School Advisory Board. She was one of the founders of the Judge Reva Beck Bosone Scholarship at the University of Utah College of Law. Professor Arent is a consultant and public speaker on a variety of topics including governmental relations, marketing, fundraising, candidate training, public relations, and political campaign issues. In addition, she directs marketing and is a management consultant for the Boulder Mountain Lodge in Boulder, Utah.
