Teaching Philosophy

Goals for student learning

My goal for student learning is to invoke a desire for students to seek learning opportunities in areas of interest throughout their lifetimes. I understand not every student will be interested in every subject. However, teaching with enthusiasm even through what may be considered mundane material will hopefully provide students with the tools to learn throughout classes for which they may not be interested in the topic subject. My goal is that my students will perceive I enjoy teaching and my aim to pass that energy onto them. I want students to have confidence to continue the pursuit of knowledge throughout and following my classes taught.

Methods to achieve goals

My methods to achieve my goals are to continuously look for new and innovative ways to teach, teach using different platforms of information dissemination, and use “real-life” examples to help put the subject area into context for students. I also believe in relying on my students to assist with teaching is useful. Creating “lesson” plans that involve my students’ participation will hopefully lead to their willingness to come to class prepared knowing that I consider their input invaluable to teaching a subject.

Methods used to assess student learning

When able, speaking with students individually will help me best evaluate their learning.  Exams are a way to assess learning depending on the subject. However, I feel exams are not always fair to students who have anxiety when taking tests. I would like to try offering students the choice of how their learning is assessed. If student wants to be evaluated with an exam, I will write an exam for that student. However, if a student presents to me another way to assess their learning, I will certainly consider this. I would like every student to have the opportunity to be fairly evaluated for their performance and knowledge gain. Relying only on the typical methods of evaluation may not allow each of my students to feel successful in my class.

Plans for developing or improving teaching

I plan to become more knowledgeable about the subject matters which I may teach. This will include staying current on evidenced based practice guidelines. I will also need to better learn to critically evaluate information to ensure I am a conduit of accurate teachings. I will continue to take educational courses to expand my knowledge but to also glean examples of how I may be a more effective teaching. I will improve my teaching by asking students for what I can do better. Lastly, I need to continuously evaluate myself. I need to strive to become the teacher I would want to have.
