Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is that the classroom should a be site of profound mutual knowledge exchange: between teacher and student, between student and student, between theory and practice, and between different points of view, value systems, types of power, and ways of thinking, learning, and doing.

Courses I Teach

  • CMP 6465 + REDEV 6960 - Public Private Partnerships (Real Estate)
This course introduces graduate students in planning, real estate development, architecture, and public policy to the world of so-called "public private partnerships" (P3s). It provides an overview of the wide range of structures P3s can take and the mix of actors they typically involve, with their diverse and often conflicting motivations and goals, powers and limitations, and definitions of benefit and risk. Students work together to explore different frameworks for planning P3 projects, defining desired outcomes, engaging the public, managing disagreement and controversy, structuring and financing deals, and mitigating risk while maximizing benefits. Case studies and frequent guest speakers help illustrate what makes a P3 successful or unsuccessful, celebrated or controversial, creative or unnecessarily complex.
