As the Co-Coordinator for the Natural Resources Learning Program (NRL) in the Department of Parks, Recreation, & Tourism I have the enviable opportunity of introducing University students to Utah’s bounty of outdoor education-related experiences. Through roughly 65 different outdoor courses students come in contact with some of our country’s most impressive landscapes, people, and experiences. My professional involvement in outdoor education, recreation, and international travel has spanned more than 25 countries with a focused interest in sustainable tourism issues and strategies. With the founding and operation of Rivers Fiji, a whitewater rafting and sea kayaking company located in Fiji, my wife and I have been able to explore, develop, and guide a company that has brought tourism-related benefits to populations historically overlooked by their government and other tourism operators. As an administrator for the NRL, I oversee 65 different outdoor courses, work with 20 + outdoor educators to teach those courses, and deal with permit issues as they pertain to the use of public lands through our programs. In addition to regular staff training and course overviews, I work with staff and others to develop new course curriculum to better meet the needs of students.
