  • PIETRO CASTRUCCI - Op. 1World Premier Recording and Scholarly Video & Edition Project. Gerald Elias, violin; Pamela Palmer-Jones, harpsichord; Noriko Kishi, cello. Published and distributed by Centaur Records: CRC 33932/3933 - 2 CDs (85:24). Abstract: Pietro Castrucci: Sonate a Violino e Violone o Cembalo, Opera Prima - Violinist and composer Pietro Castrucci (1679-1752), a protégée of Arcangelo Corelli, was the concertmaster for Handel’s opera orchestra in London from 1718 until 1737. Though his compositions demonstrate a complete mastery of his craft and have a distinctive and dramatically expressive voice, it is perhaps due to his modest output as a composer that Castrucci hasn’t attained the stature of his greatest contemporaries, because in terms of quality there are few who can claim superiority. The 2021 recording released by Centaur Records, with Gerald Elias, violin, Pamela Palmer-Jones, harpsichord, and Noriko Kishi, cello, is the first complete recording ever of these remarkable sonatas. Part of the project included Jones creating the first modern scholarly performing edition from the original 1707 publication, including a complete realization of the figured bass keyboard parts, as part of this historical performance research project. https://youtu.be/Sg92pd8TeTc Performance, refereed, completed 05/10/2021.
